Copperhead netters sweep Eureka, start 1-0 celebrating unusual Senior Night
Senior Night is customarily the final home match of the season, celebrating all of the hard work and sacrifices the team has made to get to that point. On Friday, the Copperheads used it as a potential wake-up call to those teams in their sights.
Leaning on contributions from all six seniors, Anaconda swept the Lady Lions 25-16, 25-15 and 25-17, moving to 1-0 on the season.
Friday served as a few milestones for the squad as well. For starters, it was the christening of former Copperhead great and first-year head coach Korey Krumm, while also serving as the first game at Memorial Gymnasium in two years due to last year’s remodel.
Senior Aubrey Tuss recorded a team and match-high 11 kills, five apiece in Games 2 and 3. Classmates Mia Sullivan-Sanders and Brianna Puyear both added six, senior Megan Reich tallied three and juniors Payton Bailey and Malia Harris added one each.
Anaconda tallied 11 aces led by Harris’ four and senior setter Tiora Ferguson’s three. Senior Katie Montgomery added two and Reich and Puyear’s one. Bailey, a 5-foot-10 junior in her first varsity action, was impressive at the net leading the team with four blocks.
Anaconda was supposed to take on Troy Saturday, but the visitors cancelled on Thursday. Anaconda will be back in action Tuesday, taking on Butte Central at the Maroon Activities Center.
