Following a weekend Tip Off Tournament win in Mission, Anaconda doubled down with the effort against the visiting Lady Bulldogs in the Copperhead home opener. The result? A 3-0, 25-18, 25-23, 25-15 sweep of the 7B rival at Memorial Gymnasium.
The Copperheads survived some out of the ordinary service errors in games 1-2, but had things figured out by the time Game 3 rolled around. With the final game tight at 8-7 in favor of Anaconda, junior libero Addi Case went on an 11-point service run highlighted by three of her team-high six aces to put the game and match out of reach.
Similar to Game 3, the Copperheads came back from four points down courtesy of a Logan McKay service run that essentially kickstarted the match. McKay notched two aces in that service run, turning into a three point lead.
McKay led with a game-high 15 kills, followed by Addison Jovanovich’s six. In total, Anaconda out-killed Mission 37-11. The Copperheads recorded 12 aces led by Case, McKay and eighth-grader Maizee Mitchell with three apiece. Mitchell became the first eighth-grader in program history to not only suit up for the high school team, but to start in a varsity match, recording two kills and two blocks as well.
Even more youth saw playing time for the Copperheads with freshmen setter Brigid Mehrens and outside hitter Ilaina Cline, with Cline collecting three kills and Mehrens a block. Junior setter Addie Olson led the team is assists not available at the end of the match, but also recorded four kills followed by twin sister Jori with one.
Mission was led by Kieran Incashola’s five kills and Avia Lee with three aces.
Anaconda is back in action next Tuesday in Twin Bridges.
