Copperheads erase double-digit deficit, knock off Whitehall 55-48

Down 28-19 at the half after first half foul trouble limited their defensive effectiveness, Anaconda poured on the pressure in the third quarter and held on for a 55-48 nonconference win over Whitehall Thursday at Memorial Gymnasium.

Sophomore Isabel Saltenberger works on the low post during Thursday’s win.

The Copperheads outscored the Lady Trojans 18-4 in the third quarter thanks to a stifling full court 1-2-2 trap. It also helped that 6-fo0t sophomore Dorothy Mastel was lost with her third foul early in the third.
With Mastel on the bench, Anaconda went to work. Sydnie Peterson scored a team-high 18 followed by Logan Stetzner’s 12 and Johanna Forsberg’s 11 — five points of which came from the free throw line late to ice the game down the stretch.
Anaconda’s first lead came at the 2:43 mark of the third at 32-30 and never looked back.
Mastel fouled out with four minutes left in the fourth with 13 points, leaving Whitehall without a post presence and rebounder. Asha Noyes, a sophomore guard, led all scorers with 23.
Anaconda is back at home Saturday when they host Eureka in a nonconference game at Memorial Gymnasium. Tip off is at approximately 4 p.m. and will be covered live on http://copperheadcountry.airtime.pro
